contemporary cottage garden in
bookham

Brief

A sloping bank down to the house and a narrow strip of paving limited the practical space in this garden. The brief was to provide a contemporary style garden with steps up to a lawn, a more generous sized patio and space for a large trampoline.

Design and outcome

Black basalt paving was the choice for the patio and steps; a hard wearing volcanic stone with a smart contemporary look. The grey colour also tied in with the windows of the house.

Steps now lead from the wide bi-fold doors onto a rectangular lawn and retaining beds were faced with bricks to match the house. The trampoline is sunken and placed to one side of the garden out of immediate view from the dining area.

Contemporary cottage style planting softens the look; grasses mixed in with perennials salvia, knautia, alliums, lavender, verbena and heleniums. Evergreen shrubs Phlomis, Griselinia and Ceanothus provide structure. An existing mature Lilac was retained for screening, along with Cornus and an orange climbing rose complimented the rest of the planting beautifully.
